UPDATE: The UN has confirmed that COP 25 will move to Madrid, Spain on the same date. A move like this means frontline communities and civil society organisations might be even more sidelined in the talks and we need to keep pushing for these voices to be heard, and for the polluters to be kicked out.
The Chilean government has suspended the COP25 climate talks. So we demand a People’s Climate Summit instead - and at this Summit, we want the United Nations to prioritize the voices of people, not polluters. It’s time to kick polluters out of the climate talks and give them back to the people.
We are specifically calling for:
- The United Nations must center the voices of the people in all global efforts to address the climate emergency. More space must be given to civil society, social movements, Indigenous peoples, frontline communities, and the public at large to shape a global response to the climate crisis.
- The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat must guarantee the safe and full participation of civil society in all future climate talks. This includes working with host countries to prioritize public participation.
- The UNFCCC must kick polluters out of the climate talks. The fossil fuel industry and their corporate front groups attend the climate talks for the sole purpose of silencing the voices of the people. They have no right to sit at a table that they are setting on fire.
- The protection of human rights must become a central pillar of any global climate agreement and included in all national pledges to address the crisis. This means a renewed focus on addressing the human rights violations caused by fossil fuel companies. Frontline communities and countries must be compensated for the loss and damage inflicted upon them by climate disasters.
The UN and UNFCCC should begin an open dialogue with civil society about how to meet these demands and provide support for any alternative spaces that are established to further public participation in the global climate process.
