Dear EIB Director,

I am writing to you as EIB Director for my home country to ask that you commit to not funding new fossil fuel projects, including the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.

The EU has repeatedly vowed to be a leader on tackling the climate crisis -- that leadership means not investing public money in a new fossil fuel project.

With existing gas infrastructure significantly underused and the industry and EU consistently overestimating demand, the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline is not required for energy security in the EU, but these €1.5billion would make a real difference if re-invested into energy efficiency or small-scale renewables.

As the world’s largest public lender, the European Investment Bank has a responsibility to lead by example and avoid financing fossil fuels. Approving this loan on the same day as the One Planet climate finance summit in Paris, for the 2 year anniversary of the Paris Agreement, would be a disgrace for a public institution claiming to be a climate champion.

Greenwashing is not a solution to climate change, and it’s time for the EIB to make a meaningful commitment. This means not spending a euro more on TAP and on new fossil fuels.
