Call on Kerstin Jorna to defund TAP

On Tuesday 12 December, the board of the European Investment Bank (EIB) will vote on a €1.5billion loan to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.

Write to EIB director for the European Commission, Kerstin Jorna, to call on the EIB to #DefundTAP.

Write to EIB Director Kerstin Jorna:

Dear Kerstin Jorna,

I am writing to you as EIB Director for the European Commission to ask that you commit to not fund the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.

The Commission has not carried out a climate assessment of the Southern Gas Corridor project despite it being the largest fossil fuels project the EU is currently pursuing. In fact, the Commission’s own assessments point to a decline in gas demand in Europe by 2050. A gas project of the scale of the Southern Gas Corridor is likely to become a stranded asset and a toxic investment for the public purse.

The Commission you are representing has on several occasions tried to justify the Southern Gas Corridor project as a means to mitigate Europe’s dependence on Russian gas imports, but in fact there are signs that the Trans Adriatic Pipeline could be used for shipping Russian gas into Europe. Yes, we should improve Europe’s energy security, but the best way to do it is by cutting energy demand through investment in energy efficiency, and by stepping up investment in renewable energy within Europe -- not by making Europeans reliant on gas pipelines controlled by the authoritarian regimes in Azerbaijan and Turkey.

We need you to help prevent the largest ever loan of European public money from being put into a project that is so obviously against European values and interests.
