Auckland Council has proposed sweeping cuts to arts, community, environmental and climate change services. This is gutting - now is a time to invest in our city, not to hurt it for years to come. All of us deserve to live in a safe climate, in a city with robust community services and fast, clean transport that gets us to where we live, work and play.
On top of the cuts to key climate and public services - Auckland Council is proposing selling their shares in Auckland Airport, which would surrender much of the Council’s ability to force emissions reductions. This would be a generational mistake; our public infrastructure should be for public good – not private profit.
However, we’ve been doing some lobbying of councillors behind the scenes, and have some good news. Public backlash has forced many of our elected representatives to reconsider their position on the budget. If we build enough public pressure, we can instead achieve a better budget that properly funds our climate and our communities in this city we share.
