Call on Trudeau and Finance Minister Freeland to stop propping up the Trans Mountain pipeline and instead invest in a Just Transition to 100% clean energy.
Trudeau and his cabinet ministers just approved a $10 billion dollar loan guarantee for the Trans Mountain pipeline. That means the public is on the hook to backstop the ballooning costs of TMX despite the Trudeau government’s promises to stop spending taxpayer dollars on the project and to end fossil fuel subsidies. This is unacceptable. Canada can’t do its part to tackle the climate emergency while we’re still dumping billions of dollars into fossil fuel expansion. It’s time for Trudeau to stop delaying action on the climate crisis and invest in a just transition that works for everyone.
Dear Prime Minister Trudeau & Finance Minister Freeland – Cancel the $10 billion loan guarantee for Trans Mountain and invest in a Just Transition.
Three months ago, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland promised that your government would not waste another penny of public funds on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project. Yet, last week we learned that Cabinet ministers have approved a $10 billion dollar loan guarantee for TMX. This is nothing more than another subsidy for the fossil fuel industry in the midst of a climate emergency. Today, I’m calling on you to cancel this loan guarantee and invest in a Just Transition.
The cost of this project has ballooned to more than $21 billion, over 70% higher than previously estimated. TMX has faced countless delays, including twice in 2021 because of climate disasters – first the intense summer wildfires, then the catastrophic floods that happened six months ago. Subsidizing this reckless project is part of this government’s ongoing pattern of delaying action on the climate emergency and puts all of our lives and livelihoods at risk.
If you’re serious about tackling the climate crisis and protecting communities, it’s time to cancel this loan guarantee, stop fossil fuel expansion, and pass a Just Transition Act that invests in the green jobs and critical infrastructure needed to retool our economy as we rapidly shift away from fossil fuels.
