Our goal is to get every single person using 100% clean, safe and affordable renewable energy. To do that, we need to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 across the world.

The good news is that our campaigning got world leaders to commit to that at the 2023 UN climate conference, COP28.

But, the biggest barrier to switching to renewable energy right now is money. The money is there. It’s just powering the wrong things.

Rich governments and big multilateral development banks – like the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank – keep investing in fossil fuels.

For example, between 2020 and 2022 the G20 group of countries – the world’s biggest economies including the US, Canada, France, Germany and Japan – invested US $142 billion¹ into fossil fuel projects abroad. That’s despite those in the G7 group of biggest economies, to which the US, Japan, Germany and Canada belong, pledging in 2022 to halt overseas funding of fossil fuels.

We need to ramp up the pressure on them to shift this money – especially public money – away from fossil fuels, and into renewables where it’s needed most.

The energy we want is clean and healthy, and it doesn’t replicate the injustices of the past. Our new energy system must not benefit a wealthy few in the fossil fuel industry, while we are struggling to pay our bills or can’t access enough energy to meet our needs.

The new 100% renewable energy system must serve the needs of communities. It must help those who have contributed the least to causing the climate crisis, but feel its worst impacts. It must not leave people and countries burdened with enormous debt they can never get out of.

Our first step to make sure we get the money where it needs to go is to target the world’s richest countries who have made agreements promising to scale down their support to fossil fuels and fund renewables instead. Like the Clean Energy Transition Partnership: France, the UK, the United States and Japan have all agreed to transition funds. But they’re not ending funding for coal, oil and gas fast enough or putting them to the renewables needed.

By signing the petition, you’ll hold our leaders accountable and help sustain the pressure to get them to follow through on their commitments.

Alongside our global partners, actions on the streets and media work, this petition will help show them the huge support for moving the money and funding the fair transition to renewable power.

We know this works, we’ve done it before. Our climate movement got more than 130 countries to pledge to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 at COP28. When we work together and keep up the pressure they listen. This is why we must keep the momentum until the money gets to where it is needed.
