Minister Plibersek — Fix our environment laws

We can have a future safe from the impacts of climate change, but all remaining fossil fuels must stay in the ground. Instead, the environment minister continues to approve new coal and gas projects.

The government is trying to reform Australia’s environment laws. These will help determine whether or not coal and gas projects are approved or rejected, so we’ve got a rare opportunity to make sure they’re strong enough to knock back all fossil fuel projects.

We’re building a massive campaign to show the Albanese government that the community demands action. The bigger it is, the more impactful our collective voice will be, and we know we pressure them to protect people – not polluters. Will you take 30 seconds to join the campaign?

Dear Minister Plibersek,

Any delays to fixing our environment laws put species and our climate at risk. We call on you to urgently fix the laws this term of government so they are in line with the climate crisis nature and our communities are facing.

To fix our laws, we call on you to include:
  1. End all coal and gas approvals – there is no room for more fossil fuel projects in a safe climate;
  2. Include a climate trigger in the Act that values our climate as a matter of national environmental significance, applying to all emissions upstream to downstream;
  3. Pull the water trigger to call-in Tamboran and Empire's fracking wells for water assessment now;
  4. Our new nature laws must truly value and incorporate the rights, knowledge and culture of First Nations people;
  5. Greater transparency and accountability of decisions through a third party merits review and independent EPA.
We look forward to new national environment laws that will protect Country and climate for generations to come.
