Make Them Pay: Billionaire gas companies must pay tax on exports

Right now, global billionaire oil and gas corporations pay next to nothing to Australians for the resources they drill and export overseas for eye-watering profits.

While everyday people struggle with grocery and housing prices, companies like Exxon, Shell, INPEX, and Chevron haven’t paid a cent of tax on the oil and gas they export (through the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax) on a combined income of $297 billion over the 9 years to 2021-22!

The tax framework the Labor government chose last year is set to bring in $4 billion less than what was projected — it isn’t working. The government must choose to fund critical public services, like raising the rate of Jobseeker or adequate funding for Aboriginal services, not tax breaks for billionaire companies.

If enough of us sign to show our support for taxing oil and gas billionaires, we can demonstrate to the treasurer that making them pay is a popular and sensible decision - instead of just hearing from the oil and gas lobbyists stalking the halls of parliament.

All budgets are about choices, the Albanese government must choose to appropriately tax oil and gas billionaires.

To Treasurer Jim Chalmers,

Fossil fuel companies are making record profits and worsening the climate crisis, and changes to the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax have failed to increase the taxes they pay.

Ongoing loopholes mean the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax is failing to collect reasonable levels of tax revenue from fossil fuel companies.

Research shows that strengthening this tax will raise billions of dollars. While communities are suffering from the impacts of climate change fuelled by these oil and gas companies, they’re paying barely any tax. It’s time for them to pay.

Please raise and fix the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax for the next federal budget, so it delivers for community and the climate
