I stand with you

Pledge in Defence of Black Lives

We, as white and non-Black people of colour across the world, pledge to take action for Black Lives as climate activists. We recognise that the climate crisis is a racist crisis that systematically harms and oppresses Black communities and communities of colour – and we are committed to stopping this injustice.

We stand in global solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives in the United States, and we understand that anti-Black racism impacts all of us around the world. We all have varying degrees of privilege that can be used to fight for the end of systems of exploitation, oppression and extraction that dehumanise Black and Indigenous people and communities of colour everywhere. Our commitment to showing up for racial justice is both immediate and for the long haul.

Right now, as we are able, we commit to:

  • Visibly and vocally support the global movement for Black Lives and its demands, including divestment from police and reinvestment in Black communities.
  • Show up in support of Black-led mobilisations and protests in our communities.
  • Give money and resources to Black-led organisations to support work for racial justice.
  • Ask our white and non-Black POC friends, family and neighbours to join us in action, and take the time to engage them in conversations about why the struggle for racial justice is happening, and critical to all our liberation.

As we continue to fight for climate justice, we commit to ensuring our work addresses the racial injustice that is at the core of the climate crisis. We will:

  • Prioritise Black communities, communities of colour, and Indigenous peoples that are hardest hit from the COVID-19 pandemic as we respond to the virus.
  • Demand a Just Recovery that centres racial and economic justice by investing in Black community and worker needs. At the same time, we must defund harm from police, prisons, and the fossil fuel industry that fuels climate crisis.
  • Build a multiracial, anti-racist climate movement that shows up to defend Black, Indigenous and Communities of Color, through campaigns that centre these communities.

With Black lives on the line, whether from police violence or climate catastrophe, there is no time for neutrality. We commit to take action, and to invite our white and non-Black people of colour family, friends, co-workers and neighbours to join us.

Written with gratitude for the leaders in the United States of the Movement for Black Lives, Reclaim the Block, Black Visions Collective, and everyone taking the streets for a more just world for all of us.
