Buttigieg: We Need A Real Climate Leader

Tell Mayor Buttigieg: We don’t have time for middle-of-the-pack climate plans. We need Democratic candidates who are ready to lead on climate. Specifically, a real climate leader must:

  1. Oppose all new federal permits and leases for fossil fuel infrastructure and extraction, from pipelines to LNG export terminals and coal mining leases.
  2. Commit to investigating the fossil fuel industry’s role in causing the climate crisis and misleading the public about it.
  3. Support a national end to fracking for oil and gas.
  4. Respect his commitment to the spirit of the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge by rejecting campaign funds and campaign advice from fossil fuel executives and lobbyists and their corporate PACs.

Sign the letter today to demand real climate leadership from candidate Pete Buttigieg.

We are in the fight of our lives to take on the climate crisis and the clock is ticking. This election is our chance to enact the kind of bold climate solutions required to avert the worst consequences of this crisis. Mayor Buttigieg is a new face gaining a lot of attention, but his climate policy doesn’t lead the curve.

Two other leading candidates, Senators Sanders and Warren, have taken bold positions to support a Green New Deal, commit to ambitious timelines for 100% renewable energy, ban fracking, and hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for driving the climate crisis.

Buttigieg’s plan includes false solutions like direct-air carbon capture and sequestration and continued investment in natural gas projects. While he claims he will run all new infrastructure through a climate test, he has been hesitant on the campaign trail to explicitly oppose new coal, oil, and gas projects. He recently told 350 Action fellows at a campaign stop in New Hampshire that he wouldn’t even ban one of the dirtiest, most destructive forms of fossil fuel extraction -- mountaintop removal coal mining.

Tell Pete Buttigieg that we need him to decide where he stands on the climate crisis: with the people and not the polluters.  Time is short and the science is clear: We need Mayor Buttigieg -- and all candidates for the Democratic nomination -- to lead on climate, not just meet the bare minimum.

Tell Mayor Buttigieg: We don’t have time for middle-of-the-pack climate plans. We need Democratic candidates who are ready to lead on climate.

Dear Mayor Buttigieg,

We are in the fight of our lives to take on the climate crisis, and the clock is ticking. This election is our chance to enact the kind of bold climate solutions required to avert the worst consequences of this crisis.

So far, the plans and proposals you have put forward do not meet the threshold for real climate leadership. As concerned voters who want to see robust climate plans put forward by all candidates in the Democratic 2020 primary, we are calling on you to do the following:
  • Oppose all new federal permits and leases for fossil fuel infrastructure and extraction, from pipelines to LNG export terminals and coal mining leases.
  • Commit to investigating the fossil fuel industry’s role in causing the climate crisis and misleading the public about it.
  • Support a national end to fracking for oil and gas.
  • Respect his commitment to the spirit of the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge by rejecting campaign funds and campaign advice from fossil fuel executives and lobbyists and their corporate PACs.

Tell Mayor Buttigieg: We don’t have time for middle-of-the-pack climate plans. We need Democratic candidates who are ready to lead on climate.
