For far too long, for-profit utility companies have been raising rates for basic necessities while keeping all of us reliant on expensive, climate-wrecking fossil fuels.
If she is elected President, VP Kamala Harris has the opportunity to address this. Everyone deserves the right to fulfill our basic needs like heating our home when it’s cold and cooling it when it’s hot without going bankrupt or contributing to the climate crisis.
Sign now to urge VP Harris to hold utility companies accountable!
Dear Vice President Harris,
As you know, utility bills have skyrocketed in the last few years, all while for-profit utility companies are padding their margins and threatening shutoffs when we can’t afford to pay.
This has to stop. It’s an economic justice, disability justice, and climate justice issue. For-profit utility companies provide basic necessities we all rely on, but at the same time, they keep us reliant on expensive climate-wrecking fossil fuels and raise our rates whenever they can. Currently, 38% of US households are struggling to manage their utility bills. The threshold for utility bills to not be a burden is 6% of a household’s income, but some ratepayers are paying as much as 30% of their income to have access to this basic human need.
This is why we want you, VP Harris, to step in if you are elected as our next president. You have the power to change the system! By putting a 3% cap on a household’s energy burden (making utility bills no more than 3% of a customer’s total household income), we can make sure no one has to choose between putting food on the table or keeping the lights on.
And as you know, affordability is one of the top concerns that voters have this election. So, please, be the climate justice leader we need and put a stop to utility companies exploiting the American people while unashamedly burning up our planet.
Utility justice is climate justice.
Thank you,
