Urge Minister Woods to stand strong on Oil & Gas

This week the ban to new offshore oil and gas exploration was put into law by the government. But oil and gas lobbyists have twisted the arm of Minister Megan Woods so they have ‘more leniency on the conditions of existing exploration permits’.

Don’t let them unpick our hard work and create a loophole! Tell Minister Megan Woods: Kia kaha, for us and our climate.

Effectively, the oil and gas industry has struck a deal. It means for them, the law can be flexible. We cannot afford the damage that furthering the interests the oil and gas industry will cause. We need to throw our full weight behind a fast and just transition to 100% renewable energy for all. This means no new fossil fuels.

We need to keep demanding serious action that accepts the urgency of the issue. We cannot allow the oil industry to keep up their 40 year long routine stalling action on climate change.

Let's not let oil lobbyists bully and twist arms! Show your support for the ban and a just transition to renewable energy.

I am writing to congratulate you on putting the ban to new offshore oil and gas exploration into law this week. I also urge you to hold your ground on this decision.

Do not let the oil and gas industry twist your arm! Kia kaha for us and our climate; no means no.

As you know, New Zealanders are passionate about bold and effective climate action. Over the past decade we’ve rallied, petitioned, and turned up in the tens of thousands to make our voices heard, myself included. The groundswell of support is strong and growing.

Your announcement to ban new offshore oil and gas exploration earlier this year put New Zealand on the world stage as climate leaders. As a nation we became a beacon of hope for what can be achieved elsewhere in the world.

I want to see serious action that accepts the urgency of the issue. I support a fast and just transition to 100% renewable energy for all, and I recognise this means no new fossil fuels.

Unfortunately, it’s clear the oil and gas industry cannot accept that no means no. I recognise the pressure you are put under by oil lobbyists and MBIE. But I’d like to reiterate the immense support you have in making what is a positive, necessary, and first of many steps to a safe climate for all of us.
