Tell the UK: Stop Blocking Progress

A critical opportunity is unfolding and we shouldn't miss it. On 30 June - 3 July 2, 2025, world leaders are heading to Seville, Spain, for the United Nations’ Financing for Development Summit – a chance to rewrite the global financial rules that are driving inequality, debt, and climate collapse.

But while many countries are stepping up with bold proposals – like taxing billionaires and cancelling debts – the UK government is trying to block progress.

As public figures, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Affairs Secretary David Lammy are responsive to what people think. A strong show of concern can push them to back real solutions, and help the UK be a force for good.

Send them a letter today demanding they support real solutions: tax the super rich, cancel unfair debt, stop funding fossil fuels, and invest in community power.

The world is at a breaking point. Climate disasters, rising inequality, and growing debt burdens are devastating lives everywhere, especially in the countries that did least to cause these crises. Meanwhile, billionaires increased their wealth by $2 trillion last year – that’s $5.7 billion a day![1]

These aren’t random outcomes. They’re the result of a global financial system that concentrates wealth, rewards pollution, and deepens injustice. But these rules are not fixed – they are choices. And right now, you have the power to help change them.

At the UN’s Financing for Development (FfD4) summit in Seville, Spain, the UK has a critical opportunity to show real leadership. I urge you to stand with the growing global movement – led by countries like Spain, Brazil, and South Africa, and take bold action to fix our broken financial system.

That means backing – not blocking – a new global tax convention, supporting debt cancellation for vulnerable countries, and ending public financing for fossil fuels.[2]

The year ahead presents three key global moments for transformative action:
- at FfD4 in Spain, governments and financial institutions must commit to deep reform that serves people, not profits.
- at the G20 Summit in South Africa, world leaders must support a Just Energy Transition Fund built on taxing excessive wealth and cutting fossil fuel subsidies, and;
- at COP30 in Brazil, global finance must finally align with climate science and community power.

These are not just events – they are moral tests. The UK must not be remembered as a barrier to justice and cooperation. You can choose to be part of the solution.

I urge you to deliver bold, structural change, including:
- Cancel the Debt, Free the Future: Support a permanent UN-led mechanism for fair debt restructuring and cancellation.
- Tax the Super Rich to Fund the Future: Back a global wealth tax and support the UN Tax Convention to stop tax abuse by corporations and the ultra-rich.
- Fund Community Power: End fossil fuel finance and redirect public funds to locally-rooted, renewable energy projects.
- Grants, Not Loans: Stop adding to the debt burdens of climate-impacted nations. Public climate finance must be in the form of grants.
- Justice for Communities: Ensure finance is led by those most affected, with full transparency and the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent.

People around the world, including in the UK, are calling for fairness, accountability, and action. Over 89% of the global public supports stronger climate action.[3] The world is watching.

Please do what is right. Fund our future, not billionaires and polluters.
