A fair switch to renewable energy needs a transformative financial plan.

A big part of that plan requires the richest governments to make big investments and support developing countries to deal with the climate crisis.

The world’s wealthiest nations — the G7 — are meeting, they must:

1) Stop funding coal, oil and gas abroad and fund renewable energy instead.
2) Give much more fair finance to help poorer countries make the fair transition to renewables

I am calling on you, as a G7 member and a leader of one of the world's richest countries and biggest economies, to help set a clear, transformative climate finance goal.

We know the money for this is available. Public finance is not scarce. Your countries should leverage all available options — such as taxing wealth or fossil fuel profits — to source it. You must also stop funnelling public finance to fossil fuels.

As leaders of the richest nations, biggest economies and biggest historical emitters of greenhouse gases, the G7 must provide leadership.

I am calling on you to:

1) Stop funding coal, oil and gas abroad and fund renewable energy instead.
2) Give much more finance to help poorer countries to make the fair transition to renewables: that should be US $1 trillion per year in total support and US $200bn a year for the energy transition.

The G7 Finance Ministers' meeting in May failed to deliver concrete funding agreements and clear timelines for implementing renewable energy commitments. Previous G7 commitments to climate such as phasing out coal power by 2035, and the commitment to stop funding fossil fuel projects fall short of what is needed to adequately address the climate crisis.

It’s up to you, the leaders of the G7, to urgently make up for this at the upcoming Leaders’ Summit. A fair, safe energy future cannot exist without serious investment in renewables and a New Collective Quantified Finance Goal.

You have an immense opportunity for good and to avert climate breakdown if you divert just some of your immense resources towards championing the energy transition.

This energy transition must rely on renewables that serve and meet the needs of communities all over the world. The production of clean energy we need cannot replicate the historical injustices of the fossil fuel industry.

We must also substantially address injustices and barriers in the financial system. Finance for renewables must not leave people and countries burdened with enormous debt they can never get out of, or be tied to unfair conditions that prioritise rich countries' profit.

I am calling on you now to make this commitment at the G7 Summit: stop funding fossil fuels, fund a fair transition and lead on a new transformative climate finance goal.
