Demand Personal Protective Equipment for Workers

As climate activists, we know the importance of centering those on the frontlines. Many of those fighting the COVID-19 pandemic are predominantly black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) whose lives are at immediate risk.

We also know that the needs of workers - including those now unemployed - extends into the future. Send a message to your member of Congress and let them know that they must take decisive action to protect workers.

Dear Scott Perry, Bob Casey, and John Fetterman:

I urge you to demand that the The Trump Administration deploy the Defense Production Act. I urge you to expedite immediate production of new personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure that it is routed to states for distribution across acute care, home care, and long term care settings as well as other industries whose workers risk exposure on a daily basis.

I also ask that you enforce environmental protections and ensure that communities near sterilization facilities do not face additional public health threats.

Additionally, please work to ensure that the Trump Administration:
1. Identify reserves of respirators, including N95s and PAPRs, and other PPE equipment in other industries and redistribute them to healthcare providers and other frontline workers.

2. Immediately direct the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Health and Human Services to instruct the Pentagon where to send the 2,000 ventilators it says it has in its military stocks.

3. Direct FEMA to work directly with manufacturers and distributors to purchase PPE and stop forcing states to compete with each other and the federal government.

4. Require the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to institute an emergency temporary standard for infectious disease and health protections related to COVID-19 and prevent any further erosion of health and safety guidelines in federal government.

5. Any stimulus plan and relief package must expand health protections for all, and get millions of people back to work in secure jobs.
