No Fossil Fuels & 100% Renewables

Last week we received a dire warning from the United Nations’ top climate scientists: we need to urgently phase out coal & transition to 100% renewable energy, or face catastrophic climate change.

Send a message to our Prime Minister Scott Morrison demanding emergency-response climate action.

Starting right now, we are putting the federal government on notice. Climate change is the issue of our times, and it will be the defining issue of every election.

We will take action until we get real climate action.

To keep global warming below 1.5°C, coal, oil & gas needs to stay in the ground.

Prime Minister,

Right now, droughts are devastating Australia. Bushfires regularly burn through our communities. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense, impacting individuals all over the country. Sea level rise is drowning the homes of our neighbours in the Pacific.

I would like to know how the Australian government plans to tackle the climate crisis, but there is no climate change policy for me to refer to.

As you know, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN body of international scientists that review climate change science, has released their most recent report assessing the feasibility of limiting mean global temperature rise to below 1.5°C, the aspirational goal set by the Paris Agreement.

The report shows that it is indeed possible to stay below 1.5°C and that people, ecosystems and the planet will be better off for it, but it requires transformational change now, away from fossil fuel and toward renewables.

We have barely twelve years of emissions as usual before we exceed our carbon budget, that is the total amount of CO2 we can still put in the atmosphere to have a decent shot at limiting global warming to 1.5°C.  The sooner and more quickly we cut emissions, the better our chances of meeting this ambitious goal. Or, to put it in clearer terms, every year we waste debating the obvious halves our chances of staying under 1.5°C.

According to the IPCC, the pathways consistent with a 1.5°C warming scenario require cutting emissions in half by 2030, with the share of solar, wind and hydro energy increasing 60% by 2020 to provide between half and two-thirds of total energy by 2050.

The only proven way to mitigate the scale and impacts of climate change is to stop the emissions as quickly as possible. Planting trees is good, but will only have a tiny impact, and geo-engineering options are simply a ‘hail mary’ option. There is no easy way out of the hard decisions that need to be made right now by you, our Prime Minister.

To save lives and create a safe climate future, I ask that the Australian government:

Stop all new fossil fuel projects. It’s clear that the fossil fuel industry is trying to squeeze a little more juice from their current business model before being forced to change the tune.

Invest in the dramatic acceleration of the transition to 100%, locally distributed, renewable energy systems, with off-the-grid solar and wind power and community-led energy production. This will take away power from energy giants and put it back where it belongs, in the hands of the people, while ensuring that we stop spewing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
