Pledge to vote to #StopAdani

Adani have just announced that they have financing for their mega coal mining project in Queensland.

But here’s the kicker. This coal corporation has announced that they are self financing the project. By Adani saying that they have the money to start work immediately, it looks like they are trying to pressure the government to wrap up the approvals process before the next federal election.

We need our elected leaders to step up and say they will finally represent the majority of Australians and #StopAdani, now.

We are already experiencing the impacts of climate change. And yet our State and Federal Governments want to rubber stamp a massive coal project, that will see more coal burned, that will in turn contribute to dangerous global warming.

Tell the Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten that you have pledged to take this fight to the very end.

You’ve no doubt already been inundated with letters from concerned Australians about why we need to #StopAdani.

Because this mega coal mine will wreck our Reef and groundwater, and trash Indigenous land rights.

Because the UN’s top climate scientists have told us we need to keep global warming under 1.5°C, and digging up and burning more coal – and opening up the Galilee Basin to other coal projects – will contribute directly to dangerous climate change.

Because right now, Queensland is experiencing massive bushfires, with prolonged drought, soaring temperatures in a heatwave over 40°C, and strong winds exacerbating the intense blaze. And just yesterday in Sydney, torrential rain and gale force winds flooded streets, grounded flights, and left hundreds of people without electricity. We are already experiencing the impacts of a radically changing planet.

But you know all that.

So instead I’m writing to tell you that I will keep fighting to stop this project, right to the very end. To tell you that the Adani mega coal mine is a vote-deciding issue for me, and will be front of mind during the federal election next year.

I will vote for the climate. I will vote to keep global warming under 1.5°C. And I will vote to #StopAdani.
