Over the weekend, Donald Trump launched a military strike against Venezuela, captured Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro, and declared the U.S. would take control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves.

It was shocking and illegal — the president failed to get Congress’ approval for this attack, as is required by the Constitution — and it could mean a disastrous step backward for our shared climate.

Venezuela holds more oil than any other country in the world, and Trump’s focus on seizing control of it makes it clear that oil is central to this conflict. A safer future is not an abstract ideal, it’s a political choice — and every investment in clean energy is an investment in peace, stability and self-determination.
