Demand Climate Justice in House Infrastructure Bill

While the infrastructure bill includes funding for some important programs, we need to push Congress to include bold climate policies that provide recovery to communities hardest hit by the climate crisis. We urgently need investments as big as the crises we face. We should be spending billions on transitioning immediately off of fossil fuels instead of doubling down on investments in dirty energy.

Here are some parts of the bill that actively harm the health and safety of our communities:

Billions for a massive liquified natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska;
Billions for the fossil fuel industry for carbon capture and storage, which is simply an excuse to keep the fossil fuel industry in business;
Billions in subsidies for dangerous nuclear energy;
Millions in investments for hydrogen produced from gas, carbon capture, biomass and nuclear;
Millions to produce hydrogen from gas, carbon capture, biomass and nuclear.

The infrastructure bill was supposed to be our chance to rebuild the nation with green infrastructure, create fair-wage union jobs, and end the practice of government handouts to Big Oil and Gas who use public money to pollute our communities and accelerate the climate crisis.

By passing the bill in its current form, the Senate missed a major opportunity to invest in vital climate resilient infrastructure. Instead of facing the climate crisis, the Senate chose to invest billions into propping up the fossil fuel industry. While they could have led the way to a clean energy future, they chose to pour billions into the false promise of carbon capture and storage, further locking us into decades of new fossil fuel infrastructure which will ensure planetary and community devastation.

As your constituent, I urge you to make investments that match the level of the climate crisis and take seriously our communities’ urgent needs for clean air and water, a livable climate, and a more equitable future seriously.
