The World Court has spoken. Now the EU must act

The highest court in the world just confirmed it. Governments HAVE to take action to protect us from climate change.¹

The EU’s climate lead Wopke Hoekstra has an important role to play in making this happen – not least at COP30.

The EU must live up to the court’s ruling – end fossil fuel expansion, uphold the 1.5°C goal, and protect communities.

As a concerned individual who cares deeply about our shared future, I urge you to ensure that the European Union’s position at COP30 fully reflects the recent advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.1

The ICJ has made it clear: governments have legal obligations to act on climate change, prevent further harm, and protect people’s human rights, especially those most impacted by the crisis.

As the EU’s lead climate negotiator, I respectfully call on you to:
 - Align EU climate commitments with a 1.5°C pathway in line with international legal obligations
 - End fossil fuel expansion and subsidies within and beyond the EU
 - Ensure ambitious, fair climate finance that supports a just transition globally
 - Put human rights and frontline communities at the heart of all climate negotiations

The world is watching. This is a critical opportunity to show real leadership – not just in words, but in meaningful action.
