The Morrison government has some outlandish plans to bankroll the expansion of oil and gas fields across the country, as advised by his fossil fuel exec stacked Covid-19 Commission last year.

A 4 Corners special on the gas-fired recovery showed us that expert advice points to public subsidies for gas companies being a terrible idea, and that the government has been pressuring these experts to alter their findings in favour of the government's plans.

I was shocked to see revelations on 4 Corners last night that Angus Taylor attempted to pressure AEMO into changing their report recommendations, and just how misplaced billions of taxpayer dollars would be on a so-called "gas-fired recovery"

As the Treasurer, you control the purse strings of this country and have a responsibility to make fiscally responsible decisions with taxpayer dollars, and I would like to see economic recovery spending channeled in the direction of more beneficial projects.

Gas is a polluting fossil fuel that harms our waterways, land and air. Mining and burning gas is fuelling climate change, harming health, driving disasters and damaging the economy.

Multinational gas companies have been ripping us off for years. They pay little or no tax from exporting overseas most of the gas they mine in Australia while we’re left paying high prices for our own gas.

Australia has an opportunity to create many new jobs, and strengthen our economy, by investing in clean solutions and growing our renewable energy sector. The Morrison Government should prioritise this rather than spend taxpayer’s money supporting the gas industry.

I call on you to reject the wasteful and disastrous National Gas Infrastructure Plan spending and immediately rule out all public subsidies and loans for oil and gas companies.
