Email the CommBank CEO and tell him to respect Tiwi Islanders

Last year, CommBank, NAB, ANZ and Westpac, plus a range of international banks were part of a $1.5 billion loan to Santos AFTER the Tiwi Islanders had submitted their complaint about the consultation process and whilst the case was ongoing.

All 4 Australian banks have policies and commitments to the principles of free, prior and informed consent - something that Santos failed to secure from the people of Tiwi Islands.

Can you use your voice now to demand CommBank withdraws their Santos loan and rules out financing any parts of Darwin LNG?

Dear Matt Comyn, CEO of Commonwealth Bank,

I write today about your recent loan to Santos, whilst a case regarding their failure to secure Free Prior and Informed Consent from Tiwi Islanders was before the courts.

This court ruling defies your human rights policy and the rights of Tiwi Islanders to have a say over their land and sea country. The projects and corporations that you finance have real and dangerous impacts on lives and beautiful places

I stand with Tiwi Islanders who are asking you to:

Act consistently with your own human rights policies and commitments, especially the principles of FPIC and the rights of Traditional Owners
Exit the current loan facility to Santos 
Not provide any finance that will be used for Barossa’s associated Darwin LNG facility
Respect the rights of traditional owners by not providing finance to additional projects that harm the principles of FPIC

I am aware that you are currently reviewing your oil and gas lending policy - lending to a company like Santos who have no intention of slowing their expansion of fossil fuel fields should be ruled out in your new policy, and I look forward to seeing how it stacks up to the climate science.
