I am writing to express my deepest concerns over the construction of Cop City in Atlanta, Georgia — the Atlanta Police Foundation’s plan to build a $90 million militarized police training site in Weelaunee Forest — the largest urban forest in the United States.

By helping fund Cop City, you would be enabling an overpoliced state that does not hesitate to take a life, destroy the environment, impede on the civil rights of Black and brown communities, and ignore Indigenous land rights. Cop City has already led to death and destruction — police murdered Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, known as Tortuguita, who was camping in the Weelaunee Forest. Activists had exhausted legal channels and taken to occupying the forest to protect it.

I saw your name on a list of funders and supporters of the Atlanta Police Foundation, which is funding Cop City, and I am deeply concerned about the negative impact that Cop City will have on our communities, our climate, and our environment. Not only would Cop City destroy the largest urban forest canopy in the United States, it would also support the increase in cases of police brutality against Black and communities of color with its training facilities.

We are urging you to please rescind your commitment to funding Cop City immediately.
