Canada must ramp up climate finance

Carney’s upcoming austerity measures include deep cuts to many programs, and we want to make sure that international climate finance won’t be on the chopping block.

Send a letter to Prime Minister Carney and his Cabinet to let them know that there can be no meaningful progress to stop climate disasters without much-needed financial support from rich countries like Canada.

I'm writing with deep concern about the need to raise Canada’s ambitions towards international climate finance.

The current global trend of wealthy nations cutting their Official Development Assistance programs contrasted with Prime Minister Carney’s recent promise to commit 2% of Canada’s GDP to militarization while reducing social spending makes me concerned about Canada’s level of ambition in fulfilling its international climate obligations.

As one of the world's wealthiest countries and largest historic climate polluters, Canada must contribute its fair share towards global climate action – this means significant and increasing financial commitments to the Global South.

Equally importantly, while the government’s election platform included a commitment to continue Canada’s climate finance program, the focus on private capital is deeply troubling.

Reports show that 60% of low-income countries are already in, or on the edge of debt distress and spending an estimated five times more on debt servicing than on climate adaptation every year. In the face of a global debt crisis, Canada must ensure that the next climate finance pledge is made up of high-quality and non-debt-inducing finances with an emphasis on climate adaptation and loss and damage. These commitments must also be new and additional, and we must stay committed to Official Development Assistance, which contributes to the long-term global stability that is an essential part of addressing the climate crisis.

Given that the climate crisis knows no borders, it is in our deepest collective interest to ensure that the Global South, and especially Indigenous communities, who play a critical role in stewarding biodiversity, are supported to adapt to climate change, transition economies to zero-carbon, and boost sustainable development.
