BREAKING: Adani weeks away from securing financing

The mining giant Adani has revealed plans to break up the development of its Carmichael mega mine into “stages” of work – which means it will be easier for the company to find the funds needed to start building straight away, but ultimately it will be just as damaging to our water, Reef and climate.

Labor politicians have been hoping that the Adani mine would just disappear so they don’t have to deal with it – but this mining conglomerate will push ahead no matter what’s at stake. That’s why Adani is now before the courts for polluting the Great Barrier Reef, and being investigated for illegal drilling into groundwater sources.

Our politicians need to stand up and represent the two thirds of Australians who do not support this low quality, thermal export coal mine.

Call on Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek, and Shadow Environment Minister Mark Butler now to commit to stopping this destructive, climate-destroying project.

It was revealed today that Indian conglomerate Adani is set to embark on a smaller, first stage of the controversial Carmichael coal mine in Queensland that could see financing secured soon and construction start on a now $2 billion mine and rail project.

However, breaking the Carmichael mega mine into “stages” of work will still have a devastating impact on Australia’s waterways, Reef and climate.

Adani is trying to speed up work, while it can still profit from rapidly shrinking global coal market. Just today, a new report from IEFFA shows that the global seaborne coal market is tanking and most countries around the world are rapidly moving from polluting coal and toward more affordable clean energy.

There is no more time for inaction from federal Labor. The Adani mega coal mine is not a problem that is going to go away – and neither is the #StopAdani movement.

I am asking you to publicly commit to stopping the Adani coal mine and keeping all of the Galilee Basin coal in the ground. We need political leadership to end Adani's mine plans and to protect our climate and Reef. Please step up and take action to #StopAdani now, before it’s too late.
