Phone Minister Plibersek for climate laws

This morning, Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek is introducing changes to the environment laws to parliament. But there’s nothing in them that means the Minister will have to consider the emissions from the 30 new coal and gas projects that are pushing to go ahead.

Minister Plibersek has said they’ll “consult more” on further changes, including on climate, but that’s not good enough when she can make the changes now.

In 2024, environment laws must consider the impacts of climate pollution – there needs to be a “climate trigger” for these fossil fuel projects to be properly assessed.

If you want to see the government introduce stronger environment laws - make a call today.

What to say:

Say your name and where you’re calling from - if Minister Plibersek is your local MP be sure to let them know.

Say you’d like to leave a message for the Minister:

  • While there are 30 new coal and gas projects pushing for approvals, the laws that assess these projects must take into account their climate impact - will the Minister include a climate trigger?
  • Climate change is an urgent problem - we don’t have time to wait until later for these reforms, we need our environment laws to deal with fossil fuel project emissions now
  • Climate change is the biggest threat to nature - the Great Barrier Reef is being hit right now with record coral bleaching and forests in WA are collapsing.
  • The new laws should stop heavily polluting projects from going ahead, not just tinker about the edges.
  • More consultation isn’t good enough, we need these changes now.

If they say the rest of the reforms are still a priority and they're taking the time to get them right, ask they'll commit to introducing a climate trigger in this term of government.

Thank them for their time.
