Call Environment Minister Murray Watt

Call Minister Watt today at his parliament office (02) 6277 7320.

Environment Minister Murray Watt has just “provisionally” approved Woodside’s massive extension of its dirty gas plant in WA. Woodside’s North West Shelf is a key part of their massive Burrup Hub gas scheme.

It’s a truly crazy project to approve. It means the dirty gas plant can operate until 2070 – you read that right, 45 more years – threatening the incredible Murujuga rock art which is the oldest collection of rock art in the world all while emitting dangerous amounts of climate pollution. Labor has failed a critical test on climate.

What to say:

  • Introduce yourself and your concerns, e.g: “I’m a parent who lives in Burwood, and I’m deeply concerned about how climate impacts will affect my children.”
  • Ask if you can speak with the minister. If that’s not possible, ask to leave a message to pass on to the minister.
  • Say that you have seen media reports that Environment Minister Murray Watt has given provisional approval to Woodside’s polluting North West Shelf extension.
  • Express your concern that Labor could approve the biggest new fossil fuel project in the Southern Hemisphere—producing 4.4 billion tonnes of climate pollution out to 2070.
  • Explain that the North West Shelf project: will be more polluting than anything approved under Scott Morrison and is threatening ancient rock art.
  • Ask them to reject the North West Shelf extension because of its unacceptable impacts and the clear community opposition, and commit this Government to preventing the drilling for gas at Browse, under Scott Reef, which would fuel the NWS mega project?
  • Thank them for their time.
