The National Australia Bank (NAB) has just announced that they won’t finance Adani’s Carmichael coal mine - not now and not in the future.
This is yet another huge win in the fight to keep our climate and Reef safe from the Galilee carbon bomb. And it’s testament to the power of community pressure over massive corporations.
Six months ago, it looked terrifyingly possible that Adani would start constructing this monster coal project on the edge of our Great Barrier Reef. Thanks to the hard work of communities around Australia and the world, that prospect now looks increasingly dim.
Take a moment to thank NAB and don't forget to remind them that this is just the first step towards ruling out all fossil fuel financing.
But this campaign is not over yet. Whilst the hurdles for Adani are piling up - from legal action and plummeting coal prices, to community campaigns and financiers withdrawing support - our Government is still bending over backwards to keep this project afloat.
And that’s why it’s crucial that we keep up the pressure on our Banks. The more banks pull out, the harder it is for politicians like Abbott and Hunt to justify their obsession with this ridiculous project. Click here to tell ANZ and Westpac to join CBA and NAB in saying no to Galilee coal.
