In Nebraska, there is still no permitted route for Keystone. Eighty-five landowners are refusing to give up their land to make way for the pipeline, and thousands more people are rallying to deny TransCanada their Nebraska permit for Keystone XL. They’re asking pipeline fighters from across the United States to support these efforts by submitting comments to Nebraska’s Public Service Commission urging them to include climate in their assessment and oppose the permit.

If built, this pipeline would poison our climate, air, water, land and communities, and violate Indigenous rights. As one NASA scientist put it, building Keystone would be “game over for the planet”.

Take action now to urge the Nebraska Public Service Commission to consider climate in their assessment of whether Keystone XL is in the public interest and to deny the permit for the project.

TransCanada can’t start construction anywhere until they have a permit through Nebraska. That makes every comment opposing this permit a crucial step to stopping the pipeline -- no matter what Trump says.

Dear Member of the Nebraska Public Service Commission,

I am writing to you to urge you to reject the Nebraska permit to build the Keystone XL pipeline. This pipeline is bad for the climate, poses risks to our water and land, infringes on indigenous rights, and is not wanted by landowners in Nebraska.

Please consider the climate impacts of this pipeline when evaluating whether it's in the public interest of Nebraskans. This pipeline would carry 830,000 barrels per day of tar sands oil- the world’s dirtiest oil. NASA scientist James Hansen has said that approving this pipeline and further allowing the tar sands to develop would be “game over for the planet”. (1)

We are already seeing the effects of climate change in Nebraska and across the U.S., and this pipeline would only increase our problem. According to the University of Nebraska, the effects of climate change are going to cause increases in temperatures in Nebraska which will lead to more rain, worse flooding, more days over 100 degrees F, and decreased water flow in Nebraska's rivers and streams. (2) This could have devastating impacts on Nebraska’s farms and economy.

In addition, this pipeline would pose the risk of oil spills along the entire route, including waterways, and in the Sandhills region. Keystone XL is slated to cross the Ogallalla Aquifer, which provides fresh water for America’s heartland. Tar Sands oil is not easy to clean up and our land and water would be harmed irreparably from a spill.

Lastly, there are dozens of landowners along the proposed route and several Indigenous tribes who do not want this pipeline to cross their land. This would violate Indigenous rights, and the state would have to invoke eminent domain to take over private land. Eminent domain should not be used for the private gain of a foreign oil company and we cannot violate the rights of Native Americans. That is against Nebraskan and American values and should not be permitted.

In conclusion, we implore you to take into account the following: 
– The full scope of the climate impact of the production and consumption of the pipeline's tar sands oil.
– The climate impacts that farmers in Nebraska will face with continued reliance on fossil fuels and tar sands oil including increased drought, increased floods, and lower food production. 
– The impacts of oil spills along the entire route -- including every waterway and drinking water supply. 
– The cultural impacts of the pipeline, including the effects on Tribal lands, burial grounds, sacred sites, and archaeological sites.

The Keystone XL would only wreak havoc on our climate, water, air, and land, and is not in the public interest of Nebraska or the United States. Please show your leadership by stopping this harmful project.
