Have you heard? The Australian Government has started their review of climate change policies.

Wait, what? Australia has climate change policies? As surprising as it sounds, the Government does have climate change policies (spoiler alert: they’re terrible). And if the review is news to you, that’s no surprise either. The Government hasn’t made any noise about it, and the media coverage has been… lacklustre to say the least.

Can you send a message directly to Turnbull and Frydenburg showing them that Australians everywhere are outraged by their lack of climate change policy, and then spreading the word with your networks?

I am writing with grave concern for the state of our climate change policies. Australia’s current policies fall far from what the science indicates we need. In fact, we have one of the worst track records on climate, with inadequate policies, inadequate targets, and a hesitation to break free from polluting fossil fuels.

As you're currently undertaking a review of your policies on this issue, I feel the need to express the urgency and need for substantive policy.

The evidence of dangerous climate change is growing in severity: from extreme weather events, heatwaves, bushfires, droughts and floods, to health impacts, the destruction of indigenous land, the demise of the Great Barrier Reef, food shortages and geopolitical instability. It is in Australia’s national interest to do everything it can to avoid more of these impacts.

We know that we need strong policy to reduce emissions and avoid the risks climate change poses to all Australians. In fact, 73% of Australians agree that we need stronger leadership on climate, yet our Government is sitting on its hands. To protect future generations and the wellbeing of all Australians, we urgently need Federal policies which ensure that Australia:
      •  Transitions to 100% Renewable Energy by no later than 2030
      •  Implements a plan for the orderly and predictable closure of coal-fired power generation by 2030 with a just transition for workers and communities. 
      •  Provides strong price signals across the economy for polluters to bring emissions down rapidly and send a strong investment signal for renewable energy.
      •  Implements a clear plan and timeline for the closure of all existing gas, thermal coal and oil mines,  in accordance with reaching the 1.5 degrees goal, including adequately resourced transition plans to stimulate diversified, low-pollution economies with opportunities for impacted communities and workers,
      •  Reforms the native title legal framework and the broader legal system to ensure Traditional Owners have the power to reject harmful projects on their country and are supported to meaningfully decide what happens on their land.

We know that all of these measures, and more, are possible - what we’re lacking is real leadership from you and your colleagues to do what it takes to get this important work done.

I urge you to break free from the pressures of the fossil fuel industry. The more you hesitate, the more community pressure you can expect to face in the months and years to come.
