If Victoria Can Ban Fracking, So Can Every State.

Following a five year campaign led by Friends of the Earth, Lock the Gate, and more than 75 regional communities across the state, Victoria yesterday became the first state in Australia to ban fracking and unconventional gas drilling![1]

This is proof that when we work together, we can stop the fossil fuel industry in its tracks.

So join us now and continue the hard work of our Victorian friends in urging all State Premiers and Territory Chief Ministers to ban all fracking and unconventional gas drilling across the country.

Dear Premiers Barnett, Weatherill, Hodgman, Baird, Palaszczuk, and Chief Minister Gunner

I am calling on you to follow Victoria's climate leadership on climate by banning fracking and unconventional gas drilling in your State or Territory.

After yet another year that has topped the temperature charts, we’re likely headed for a record-breaking summer. As extreme weather events intensify, there’s never been a more important time to keep fossil fuels in the ground and shift to 100% renewable energy.

And that is why I was so moved this week to see the Victorian Government listen to its constituents and impose a permanent ban on the exploration and development of all onshore unconventional gas, including hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’) and coal seam gas. This decision has come at a time when the impacts of continued use of fossil fuels on our environment and our future is becoming more devastatingly clear.

The time to act is now and I urge to follow the example set by Victoria - if they can do it, so can you - and ban fracking and unconventional gas drilling for good.
