ANZ: don't fund the New Zealand Petroleum Summit!

At the end of March, oil industry executives from all over the world are coming to New Zealand to talk fossil fuels at the New Zealand petroleum summit. ANZ bank are using their customers money to sponsor the summit. In doing so they show support for fossil fuel extraction despite climate chaos wreaking havoc across the pacific and beyond.

ANZ understands the risks and has publicly committed to responding to climate change in the below statement:

“ANZ is responding to climate change because it poses potentially serious risks, not only to the environment and our way of life, but also to the economy and more particularly, our clients.”*

However, in their petroleum summit communications they state:

"At ANZ, we are committed to supporting considered growth in New Zealand's natural resources sector."**

This disparity is unacceptable. It's time for ANZ to put their money where their mouth is and pull out of fossil fuels now. Sign and share this letter to show your support and let them know that this is not okay!

Tell ANZ senior executives that funding fossil fuels is not acceptable:

To David Hisco and Jeremy Salthouse,

I am writing to express my concern over ANZ's funding of the 2015 New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals Summit, as well as its continued funding of fossil fuel extraction projects.

As we face increasing danger from climate change, it is vital that ANZ puts its money where its mouth is and discontinues all funding of, and investment in, fossil fuel projects. This includes ANZ's support of the 2015 Petroleum Summit.

Not only is such engagement in fossil fuel activity financially irresponsible (see carbon bubble report below*) but it is morally reprehensible.

Right now in the Pacific Islands people are facing more intense cyclones and terrifying rates of sea-level rise. ANZ claims that it “is responding to climate change because it poses potentially serious risks, not only to the environment and our way of life, but also to the economy and more particularly, our clients.”**

However, in its sponsoring of the summit here and large-scale extractive projects in Australia, ANZ is demonstrating that it is responding to climate change by funding more greenhouse gas extraction.

We call on you to make the right choice by divesting from fossil fuels and pulling out of the New Zealand Petroleum Summit.
