Siemens: quit doing business with Adani. Don't help with Adani's mega coal mine plans in Australia.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

The Adani mine in Australia is probably the largest, most destructive new coal project you’ve never heard of. If it starts operating, it will produce millions of tonnes of climate-wrecking coal. It will threaten indigenous lands and deal the final blow to the Great Barrier Reef.

But the project can still be stopped - and Siemens, a European company, is the key. A massive, vocal opposition from around the globe has risen to support the Australian and indigenous campaigners in their fight to #StopAdani [1]. Before Siemens’ general shareholder meeting on Wednesday we’re raising the pressure even more.

To operate, the Adani mine needs railway signals to transport the coal to the coast. Siemens, a European giant, holds that contract - worth only around €20 million, a tiny fraction of their business [2]. Such a small thing, but getting Siemens to ditch the Adani deal could genuinely halt the construction of the mine - without the railway, there’s no way to ship and export the coal.

In a couple of days the CEO of Siemens Joe Kaeser will face shareholders and the media during the company’s annual shareholder assembly. He’s already made two mistakes.

The first was signing the Adani contract. The second was letting us know that the massive pressure he’s come under was getting to him, and that he regretted the decision when he ordered the contract reviewed a couple of weeks ago - but then still going ahead with the deal! [3]

Siemens’ upcoming AGM is a perfect opportunity to show them the exact scale of our outrage. So we’re joining forces with organisations and groups across Europe and Australia to support the plea of the #StopAdani campaigners. Together we’re giving Joe Kaeser a chance to save the reputation of his company - or to face his shareholders in shame as Siemens comes under fire.
