Your Excellencies,

The UN climate talks you host this year could be a turning point in our fight for a liveable planet.

Fossil fuels are the leading cause of the climate crisis — yet ending their use and the transition to renewable energy is not currently front and center on the agenda at COP30. Your most recent update to all countries about your vision for COP30 and the talks preparations didn’t even mention this once. That sends a dangerous and disappointing signal at a moment when global leadership is urgently needed.

Only a few weeks ago, you, President-Designate, received a letter signed by over 180 Indigenous, youth, and environmental organizations from across the world. They urgently demanded that COP30 drives forward the fair and equitable transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy.

Yet so far, your proposals sideline these critical discussions to the Action Agenda — a space for voluntary, non-binding initiatives. COP30 must do more to live up to its historic promise. These must be front and center of the formal negotiations.

It is also deeply concerning and noted that Brazil is expanding fossil fuel exploration in the Amazon, one of the most vital ecosystems on the planet. If Brazil is willing to make its mutirão a turning point in the fight for a liveable planet, ending fossil fuels must be high up on your agenda.

As the host of COP30, Brazil has a unique opportunity to shape a turning point for climate action. Past UN climate talks have delivered progress, but this year, success depends on whether COP30 addresses the root cause of the crisis: coal, oil, and gas.

Across Brazil, Indigenous Peoples, youth, and civil society are rising up to demand an end to new drilling and a credible transition plan to renewable energy. And across the world, people everywhere are calling for your leadership and the opportunity to participate meaningfully.

We urge you to put the phaseout of fossil fuels at the top of the COP30 agenda — not just in side discussions but as a core part of the Leaders’ Segment and the official COP30 outcome. This must ensure a fair, fast shift to renewable energy that is accessible to all, with Indigenous Peoples meaningfully involved in the negotiations. Wealthy countries must also provide real support to those most affected by the crisis.

You hold the pen. Now is the time to lead and tackle the challenge head-on. The world is watching.
