To the NY Department of Environmental Conservation and Governor Cuomo:

I'm writing to express my opposition to the construction of the Williams NESE fracked gas pipeline in New York Harbor. I am concerned about the impact this project will have on water quality, marine life, coastal communities and our climate, and I urge you to deny the Williams NESE pipeline’s applications for the following permits: 2-9902-00109/00002 ETS, 2-9902-00109/00003 EF, 2-9902-00109/00004 WQC and 2-9902-00109/00005 SPDES.

Construction of the pipeline will disturb the sea floor of the harbor, churning up industrial toxins such as dioxin and arsenic that will wash up on our shores. Additionally, the atrocious safety record of the Williams company is cause for alarm. Just last month a Williams gas pipeline in Colorado leaked over 1260 gallons of gas condensate. In the last decade, six people have died and 103 others have been injured in accidents at Williams pipelines and facilities. We cannot allow the people of NYC to be Williams' next victim.

As the DEC, you have a mandate to protect New York’s waters from dangerous projects and to ensure projects do not violate the Clean Water Act. Construction of this project will certainly  impact water quality and a gas leak would do the same.

The Williams pipeline will lock New York State in for decades of dependency on fracked gas at a time when scientists around the world are saying we need to drastically reduce carbon and methane emissions. Pipeline and gas alternatives are readily available and should be prioritized over this pipeline. These include efficiency, retrofit, and electrification programs that would reduce gas consumption and the expansion of new energy sources such as offshore wind, solar and battery storage.

This project is a bad investment for New York that will only accelerate climate change, impact water quality, and contribute to disasters like Superstorm Sandy. The Williams NESE fracked gas pipeline must be stopped — millions of New Yorkers are counting on you to deny this pipeline’s permits.
