Australia needs to be powered by 100% renewable energy as soon as possible. AGL plans to keep burning coal until 2050, well beyond the safe limits. That's why thousands of customers across the country are putting AGL on notice to say that unless they clean up their power, we'll seek out clean power from another company.

We've put together a template letter for you on the right to send to AGL’s Executives. It'll be more powerful if you add in a little bit about yourself, or feel free to rewrite the whole thing. It's your letter and your concerns.

To AGL Executives,

It's time to get serious about climate change action.

I am an AGL customer, and I am deeply disappointed to learn that the electricity you sell me is predominantly produced by burning coal and gas – driving dangerous climate change and damaging people’s health.

It’s clear to me that Australia is already suffering the impacts of climate change – we continue to break temperature records, while bushfires and floods are getting more severe and the Great Barrier Reef is bleaching and dying. I’ve been shocked to learn that AGL’s carbon emissions have doubled in recent years and the company plans to keep burning coal until 2050. This is extremely reckless, both for the climate and community health and undermines the responsible, sustainable image that AGL tries to project.

Australia needs to be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2030, at the very latest. This is the ambition that should drive your contributions to public debate. This means you must have a plan to retire and rehabilitate all of your coal and gas power stations in the 2020s, and replace that capacity with clean energy and storage.

Unless AGL embraces this need, you will see more and more customers like myself take matters into our own hands and join the Power for Change campaign. 
Thousands will divest from AGL, join a clean energy company, spread this story to their friends and family and become active campaigners in their communities, encouraging local institutions and businesses to do the same.

I look forward to hearing whether AGL will take my concerns and demands seriously. I won’t be satisfied with an answer that lays the blame solely with government. Yes, more action is need from our political leaders to support the energy transition, but your company has been central to creating and profiting from the dirty and expensive energy market.

You helped get us into this mess, now it’s time to do your bit to get us out – outline a plan to be out of fossil fuels in the 2020s and start advocating for a 100% renewable energy system by 2030.
