Three years ago, Israel declared a target of 20% reduction of the expected growth of greenhouse gasses by 2020 -- but now they want to put it on hold and pull all the funding.
The Israeli government has already approved a 2.2 Billion Shekels ($500 Million USD) budget for the implementation of a National Climate Protection Plan. Most of the money is dedicated to energy efficiency projects that already proved to have positive environmental, social and financial effects in the first 2 years of implementation. To avert catastrophic climate change, we need to be ambitious -- and walking away from a modest target like 20% reductions by 2020 is a step in the wrong direction.
But now, the government wants to put the National Mitigation Plan on hold for 3 years, and stop any financial support! On Monday, the members of the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, will decide about the continuation of the plan.
