Tell federal leaders to be brave on climate

We have a historic opportunity. The Trudeau government needs the support of opposition parties to pass Bill C-12 “Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act”.

We know this bill falls short of what scientists and communities are demanding. But, we can change that. If opposition parties work together to push for amendments to this bill we can win climate legislation that actually meets the climate emergency with the scale and urgency that’s needed.

We can make that happen. Together, we can speak up to demand ambition and call on our leaders in Ottawa to bring this bill in line with the pillars of a made-in-Canada Green New Deal.

Dear Minister Wilkinson, environment critics, and MPs across Canada,

I’m writing to you to respond to the net-zero emissions bill that was tabled in Parliament last November. Canada needs a climate plan that meets the scale of the crisis. Bill C-12 just doesn’t get us there. That’s why I’m writing today to urge you to rise to this historic moment and amend this legislation in line with the four pillars of a made-in-Canada Green New Deal.

It’s time for all of you to work across party lines and deliver a climate plan that meets the climate crisis at the scale and with the urgency that’s needed:

1. Listen to the Science: The targets laid out in this bill will be too little too late for Canada. We can’t wait until 2030 and still meet what’s laid out in the IPCC’s 1.5ºC report. And, we need to make sure that fossil fuel executives can’t undermine climate action anymore by banning them from the advisory board this bill would create.

2. Respect Indigenous Rights & Sovereignty: We can’t address the climate crisis in Canada unless Indigenous Peoples are full partners. We need a real plan to ensure that climate accountability includes accountability to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

3. Create Millions of Decent Jobs: During his last Speech from the Throne, Justin Trudeau promised to create a million new, green jobs. Where is the plan? This bill needs to include measures that ensure Canada is accountable for creating decent, unionized climate jobs for everyone who wants one, especially as we tackle climate change and the economic impacts of COVID-19.

4. Enshrine dignity, justice, and equity for all: Climate action needs to work for people and communities, not big corporations, and this bill needs to reflect that. It’s time to stop asking whether our climate plan works for Big Oil and start asking if it works for the people.

The world’s top climate scientists at the IPCC have made it clear that we have less than a decade to take action and avoid the worst, most irreversible impacts of the climate crisis. That means we need bold action now to retool our economy to tackle the climate crisis.
