Ask Rio Tinto to leave the Minerals Council of Australia

Australia is on the frontline of the climate crisis, and our government urgently needs to take action to protect our communities by moving away from coal, oil and gas, to 100% renewable energy.

There is one crucial barrier to progress. The Minerals Council, an institution of fossil fuel lobbyists, have been blocking policy and influencing Australian politics for decades, undermining any chance at the safe climate future we deserve. We need your help in weakening this group, to limit their ability to undermine action on climate change.

Rio Tinto, one of the world’s biggest mining companies, says they are a leader in the industry on climate. Yet, by being a member of the Minerals Council, they are part of the problem. Their departure would massively weaken this group of pro-coal lobbyists.

Sign the petition and together we'll build up pressure on their board and leadership in the lead up, and deliver this petition at their AGM on May 7.

The truth is, Australia will never be able to tackle climate change while the Minerals Council and their members have a stranglehold over our politics. Rio Tinto has a chance to stand up and make a decision which side of history they want to be on.

We have all the solutions and public support we need to take action on the climate crisis that caused the bushfire emergency in Australia recently. But for decades, the coal lobby has been blocking policy and influencing Australian politics, undermining any chance at the safe climate future we deserve.

The Minerals Council has run coordinated campaigns of lobbying, ad campaigns, revolving doors between government and industry and targeted political donations to block any attempt at progress towards a safe climate future. Rio Tinto say they are a leader in the industry on climate and have moved away from thermal coal, but by being a member of the Minerals Council, they are complicit in their destructive actions.

The truth is, Australia will never be part of the solution to climate change while the Minerals Council and their members still have a stranglehold over our politics.

As long as the Minerals Council blocks action on climate change, it should be just as dangerous to associate your business with them as it is to do business with tobacco, guns, gambling or asbestos. It’s the end of the fossil fuel era - and while the Minerals Council backs polluters, instead of the minerals we need for the transition to renewable energy - they’ll continue to block action on climate change.

It's time for Rio Tinto to Cut All Ties with the Minerals Council of Australia, proving to their shareholders and all of us that they are committed to a safe climate future.

Sign up to tell Rio Tinto to leave the Minerals Council of Australia and stop paying them to undermine action on the climate crisis.
