First Nations are going to Canada’s high courts this October to challenge the Trudeau government’s approval of the Kinder Morgan TransMountain pipeline. And they need our support.

This pipeline would be a huge threat to clean water, the climate, and Indigenous rights. The bad news ts that Kinder Morgan just received its final permit to start construction on its marine terminal in Metro Vancouver as early as this fall. The good news is that if we all pull together, we can stop this project. Standing up to governments and Big Oil in court isn’t cheap and these nations need another $125,000 to cover their legal fees. If enough of us pitch in even a small amount, we can fill the gap. Together, we can stop Kinder Morgan. Many paddles, one canoe!”

We’re asking people across the country to fundraise in their communities and support Indigenous legal cases against the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

Why now?

From October 2nd to the 12th, Indigenous nations are headed to court to try and overturn Justin Trudeau’s approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. They’re going to court to stand up for Indigenous rights, for the water, for whales, for the land and for the climate. The “Pull Together” Initiative was created to fundraise for First Nations legal cases against Kinder Morgan. Learn more about Pull Together.

In short, they’re going to court on behalf of all of us. But fighting governments and Big Oil in court is expensive — so our friends at Pull Together are trying to raise $125,000 to support the 4 Indigenous Nations taking on this pipeline in the courts.

2 weeks in courts will be gruelling. That’s why we’re asking for your support in the lead up to and during the 9 days they are in court by organizing simple fundraising actions — and we’ve got all the tips and tools you’ll need to make it happen. We also want to keep momentum high for the whole two weeks, to show that people from coast-to-coast-to coast stand with First Nations.

Fundraising Ideas

We’re really asking you to do one of two things:

1. ‘Pass the hat’. Utilize moments when people are already gathered, whether it be for a concert, a faith gathering, family dinner, or house party. All you have to do is make the pitch — but make sure you check in with the organizers or hosts first! Here’s an example of 350 Divestment Campaigner, Katie, passing the hat:

2.

2. Organize a simple event. Host a movie screening and discussion in your home with friends, or organize a fundraising canvass in your neighbourhood. Again, don’t over complicate things.

If neither of these options are possible, you can always make a personal donation and share this donation page with your friends and family through Facebook and email. Every little bit helps!

Fundraising Tips:

How do you do simple, effective fundraising? Here are some tips:

  1. Be strategic about your time and resources. You don’t need to organize a big event to fundraise effectively. We’ve got some suggested fundraising activities — they’re in the following section!
  2. Be prepared. Making a clear ask is the key to effective fundraising, so prepare your pitch and practice it beforehand. Here’s some sample pitch language you can use: “Hey everyone, my name is [BLANK]. This week, 4 BC first nations are in court to try to overturn the Federal government’s approval of the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline, which would stretch from Alberta to the BC coast — posing an immediate threat to the land, water, and our climate. Because of the unique rights of First Nation’s people in this country, this legal battle is our best shot at stopping this pipeline. But here’s the catch. Standing up to governments and Big Oil in court isn’t cheap and these nations need another $125,000 to cover their legal fees. If enough of us pitch in even a small amount, we can fill the gap. Together, we can stop Kinder Morgan. Many paddles, one canoe!”
