Global Climate Strike

#ClimateStrike - Save Cockpit Country!

Friday, September 20, 6:00 AM
Stewart Town Square
Stewart Town Square
Stewart Town, Trelawny, Jamaica
Join us in Stewart Town Square for an exciting day of Education, Entertainment and Empowerment. Led by students and educators from over ten schools, we will highlight Jamaica's vulnerability to the Climate Crisis, call for the end of bauxite mining in Jamaica, and to protect ALL of Cockpit Country. Special Mining Lease 173 granted to Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners to mine the Eastern part of Cockpit Country, threatens the Rio Bueno watershed, pristine forests, local agriculture, economic centers like Stewart Town, and will continue the destruction of Jamaica’s rural heritage. Cockpit Country forests, the lungs of Jamaica, are essential to protecting Jamaica from the ravages of global warming and climate change and must not be destroyed for bauxite mining. We start at 6:00AM in Stewart Town Square with a 8 hr. IRIE FM outside broadcast with great music and important information from experts on the Climate Crisis and the value of Cockpit Country, with children and youth expressing their concerns for their futures, and testimonials from community members fighting to protect their communities. After the IRIE FM broadcast the program will continue in the square with more speakers, student exhibits and skits, musicians, performers and cultural practitioners. Join us on this joyful historic day, when we commit to a much better future and say NO to mining and YES to Bold Climate Actions.
