Global Climate Strike

Global Climate Strike in Chiang Mai

Friday, September 27, 3:00 PM
Tha Phae Gate
Mun Mueang Rd, Si Phum, Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, 50100, Thailand
BREAKING NEWS! Chiang Mai ! There is no more rice in the fields, and no more fishes in the water (as the old Thai saying once said...) Early this year, we experienced the worst air pollution in the world. We did march on the street (https://prachatai.com/english/node/7976) but nothing has changed. Sky is clearer and weather is nicer but the haze will come back soon as it always does. Droughts, floods, wildfires, tropical storms, spikes in air pollution—already in 2019 we have experienced all of these, and we’re just halfway through the year. These weren’t coincidences-- this is climate crisis. Chiang Mai's population of more than 200,000 people will continue to face not only more extreme weather and natural disasters, but also food and water scarcity, heat stress, injuries, water-borne diseases, and displacement. THIS IS NOT A DRILL - THIS IS A CLIMATE EMERGENCY Climate Strike Thailand is back in Chiang Mai this Sep. 27—school and work can wait, climate justice cannot. We will demand our basic human rights for future survival on only our home planet, and we need all your help! So we call on the Thai Government to 1) Declare a climate emergency now and set a target for 100% renewable energy share and decarbonise by 2050, by divesting from fossil fuels and phasing out coal by 2025 to limit carbon emissions and further climate change impacts. This transition has to be done in a just and equitable manner to priotise vulnerable and marginalised communities over industries as they contribute the least to climate crisis. 2) Comply with international agreements like Paris Agreement and commit to more ambitous Climate Action. *Reference a) Just and Equitable Transition http://apwld.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/2018_Just_and-Equitable_Transitions_briefer.pdf b) Thailand’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) https://www4.unfccc.int/sites/ndcstaging/PublishedDocuments/Thailand%20First/Thailand_INDC.pdf
