Global Climate Strike

#ClimateStrike Walking Meditation in Oslo

Friday, September 27, 12:00 PM
Oslo city centre, starting in front of Nationaltheatret station, by the fountain.
Johanne Dybwads plass
Oslo, Norway
The climate situation is urgent and we need to act. We do not need fear, but we do need to speak up. On 20th September, 4 million people - most of them kids - took action to say that we are ready to do more; we want our communities, our companies, our states to do more. While not talked much about in Norway, globally this was the biggest climate strike yet. Our meditative contribution in Oslo continues through the week with bells at 12 each day, and with a new walking meditation on 27th.

Why walking meditation (slow walk in silence)?
- Because we want to slow down the climate change.
- For climate peace. We need to act, act now, and act wisely. Fear doesn't help us be wise and creative. Meditative calm and mindfulness can help us be less afraid while taking action.
- To train our bodies and our minds in moving more slowly. Allowing transport from one place to another to take time can contribute to a culture for more sustainable transport habits generally (such as buses and trains).
- Slowing down is a way of enjoying simple pleasures, such as walking with friends, or seeing a lovely flower or tree. So we are also practicing (symbolically and for real) developing a more sustainable way of living: Slower, with fewer things and more time. This need not be a worse way of living than mange of us are living in Norway today. So walking meditation is a practical way of using less resources, for greater happiness. (Though this may be hard to realise at first try -- especially outdoors, where others see us.) If you like this idea and have some experience with meditation or other mindfulness practice you are welcome to join us in creating a peaceful presence, reminding ourselves that we are connected with all beings.

This action may not appeal to everyone, so please join the main action of the youth, their weekly strike (11-14 each Friday) if you can. And read up on the issues (for example, see info from the World Meteorological Organization; but also on inequality issues). Be creative and organise other kinds of awareness raising. Invite your colleagues, friends, family, clubs, and community to discuss the issues and how to rapidly and radically change our way of living together, doing business, etc. Everyone is needed. For more information about action in Oslo, see "Klimastreik (ukentlig)" on Fb. Internationally, see fridaysforfuture.org

Note that there may also be a third action at the same time, a "walk sideways" action by adults. All three actions want to support the rapid transition to sustainability.
