The Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ) together with coal affected communities has an on-going campaign against coal called " Coal Is Not The Answer", i.e. the country can traverse the path towards development and eventually fulfilling this objective without relying to the use of fossil fuel particularly coal to fuel development. That now more than ever development need not be dirty and hazardous is now a very realistic option. Also this is a direct answer to the present administration, when it announced that it acknowledged climate change but the country is not the main culprit as to why we reach this point, and we must also consider our right to development. Hence our response is this, while it is true that we have the right to develop, we do not have the right to pollute and endanger the environment and the people as well.
And one of the main component of this PMCJ campaign is to target the finances of these fossil projects, hence there really is a natural link between our on-going campaign and the global divestment that will happen this May 5-13, 2017. It is very important to establish this so-called relationship of the two campaigns so as to show that it is not a superficial one.
Because of this the partner community and member organization of PMCJ at Palawan will do a mass action within the May 5-13, calling for both local and foreign corporations, banks and financial institutions to refrain from investing in any coal projects and to divest their investments from coal to renewable enrgy sources.
