While university students around Australia were on summer break, climate change’s increasing intensity continued to stack up.
Western Australia experienced some of the worst bushfires ever recorded for the state.. In South Australia, massives fires reached within 25 kilometres of Adelaide’s CBD. Then, just weeks into first Semester, our Pacific neighbours were hit by devastating storms and cyclones, with emergency services still counting the dead in Vanuatu and almost half of Tuvalu displaced.
As these devastating climate impacts unfold, dozens of Universities around the world - from Stanford, the Marshall Islands and Glasgow - are taking a stand by moving their money out of the fossil fuels. Yet as their global peers show climate leadership, Australia’s universities are continuing to invest in fossil fuel companies driving climate devastation. So it’s time to turn up the heat!
Join Australia’s first ever National Day of Campus Divestment Action and help us send a strong message to Australian universities that investing in climate chaos is unacceptable.
Even if you aren’t a student, staff member or alumnus of a university, check to see where your closest event is and register today - we need all hands on deck to ensure our universities show real climate leadership in 2015 It's time for Australian universities to follow in the footsteps of the global peers who are making good on their commitments to a better world by moving their money out of fossil fuels.
