Middlebury College is currently considering the decision to divest its endowment from the 200 corporations that hold the majority of the world’s fossil fuel reserves.

If you’re a Middlebury student, professor, or alumni, please take a moment to sign our petition calling on President Liebowitz and the Board of Trustees to divest from fossil fuels.

Middlebury is already known as one of the greenest schools in the nation. It started the country’s first environmental studies program, became the first school of its size to commit to carbon neutrality by 2016, and its students have gone on to become pioneers in clean energy and climate related fields.

But Middlebury currently has about $30 million invested in fossil fuel companies that are wrecking the planet. These holdings stand in direct contradiction to the college’s mission to protect the environment and educate a new generation of civic and environmental leaders.

In the last few months, more than 200 campuses and universities have joined the new fossil fuel divestment movement. While two small colleges, Unity and Hampshire, have already committed to rid their endowments of fossil fuel stock, Middlebury would be the first school with a large endowment (over $900 million) to divest.

Be sure to visit Divest for Our Future to learn more about the divestment campaign on campus and lend your support. We look forward to Middlebury living up to its mission and helping our country solve the climate crisis.

The Board of Trustees

Because it is unconscionable to pay for our education with investments that will condemn the planet to climate disaster, we call on Middlebury College to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil-fuel companies, and to divest within five years from direct ownership and from any commingled funds that include fossil-fuel public equities and corporate bonds.
