Tell Governor Brown: End extreme extraction today!

We must take swift action to stop climate change from inflicting catastrophic damage in California and elsewhere.

California can't claim to be a global leader in the fight against climate change while also allowing Big Oil to frack the state and release millions of tons of carbon and methane into the air that climate scientists agree must stay inside the earth. This is even before you factor in how fracking endangers the health of our communities, poisons our scarce water supplies, and increases the risk of earthquakes.

I ask that you follow through on your promise to confront climate change, be a REAL climate leader, and put an end to fracking in California now.

Signed,

This week's oil spill at Refugio State Beach near Santa Barbara is not only devastating to the community and wildlife in the area -- it's also a call to action to finally move California away from extreme energy extraction like fracking for oil.

105,000 gallons spilled out of a failed pipeline on Tuesday. Although we still don't know precisely what kind of oil this was -- or whether or not it was fracked -- we do know is this: fossil fuels are a dirty business from start to finish.

This catastrophe is not an exception, but rather the rule. At the end of the day, pipelines will fail -- it's not if, but when.

We also know that we need to keep the majority of fossil fuels in the ground in order to fight climate change. We know that setting emissions targets is a meaningless gesture if we intend to keep fracking, pumping, and selling fossil fuels for others to burn.

If Governor Brown truly wants to be a leader on climate and environmental issues, it's time to step up and put an end to extreme energy extraction in California -- starting with fracking.
