This week's oil spill at Refugio State Beach near Santa Barbara is not only devastating to the community and wildlife in the area -- it's also a call to action to finally move California away from extreme energy extraction like fracking for oil.
105,000 gallons spilled out of a failed pipeline on Tuesday. Although we still don't know precisely what kind of oil this was -- or whether or not it was fracked -- we do know is this: fossil fuels are a dirty business from start to finish.
This catastrophe is not an exception, but rather the rule. At the end of the day, pipelines will fail -- it's not if, but when.
We also know that we need to keep the majority of fossil fuels in the ground in order to fight climate change. We know that setting emissions targets is a meaningless gesture if we intend to keep fracking, pumping, and selling fossil fuels for others to burn.
If Governor Brown truly wants to be a leader on climate and environmental issues, it's time to step up and put an end to extreme energy extraction in California -- starting with fracking.
