Adani, the overseas coal mining giant has returned with a vengeance, determined to build a new coal mine in regional Queensland. If Adani get their way, this new hole in the ground will be the biggest coal mine in Australia’s history.

But Adani needs more money to build this climate catastrophe.

Already 12 international banks have ruled out Adani’s megamine, including Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, and HSBC. In Australia, NAB has ruled out Adani’s coal mine. Of the big four banks, CommBank and ANZ have also given ground.

Westpac is the only big four bank that has said nothing about Adani. And what’s worse is that we know Westpac has done business with Adani before, right here in Australia.

Dear Westpac,

I am emailing you to call on the bank to rule out Adani’s proposed megamine.

As I understand, Westpac is the only big four bank that has said nothing to indicate that they are moving away from funding Adani’s coal mining catastrophe.

No doubt the bank is aware of the disastrous risks of global warming surpassing two degrees. There’s no other way to say this: the sheer size of Adani’s coal mining plans mean that this megamine poses one of the single biggest threats to the planet staying below this threshold.

I understand that Westpac is updating their climate change policy. This presents a great opportunity for the bank to make its position clear on ruling out Adani’s megamine.

12 international banks have ruled out this climate wrecking coal mine. NAB has also categorically ruled out this project. There is nothing to stop Westpac doing the same.

My question of the bank is simple. Will Westpac join with these other banks, and rule out funding for Adani’s coal mining project, including the mine, rail, and port expansion?
