Prosecute Adani for polluting our Reef

Last year Adani breached its pollution licence by more than 800 percent, releasing toxic coal slurry from its Abbot Point port into the Great Barrier Reef.

Now secret documents prove that Adani and the Queensland Government knew they’d exceed even their special pollution licence. Adani know they're in the wrong – they spent a year trying to block these documents.

Adani broke the law. And they got away with it scot-free.

While Adani could face up to $3.8 million in damages, so far they've been handed a paltry $12k fine which they’ve refused to pay.

The Palaszczuk Government only has a few weeks left to prosecute Adani.

The Queensland Government has a special responsibility to protect the Great Barrier Reef. So far all they’ve given Adani is special treatment when it’s clear Adani has polluted this international icon.

That's why we're demanding Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Queensland Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Leeanne Enoch hold Adani to account for unlawfully releasing toxic coal slurry into the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

QLD Govt: Prosecute Adani for polluting our Reef!

Again and again, the Australian community has been told Adani has the strictest environmental conditions of all time imposed on them.  Yet Adani has already flouted the very laws designed to protect our vulnerable Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area which has already suffered back to back coral bleaching in 2016 and 2017, with climate change a root cause.

In late March 2017, as Category 4 Cyclone Debbie approached and Queenslanders were racing to secure their homes and families, Adani was racing to secure a licence to pollute the Reef and the Caley Valley wetlands with water containing high concentrations of coal pollutants, because they knew their port could not withstand the storm and that pollution was likely.

Adani’s existing Environmental Authority permits the company to release pollutants into the Caley Valley Wetlands at concentrations up to 30mg/L. After the cyclone, Adani admitted to breaching its Temporary Emissions Licence (TEL) by more than 800%.

Adani has spent a year trying to block the release of documents that reveal exactly what they knew about the concentration of toxic coal pollutants that could flow into the Reef and Caley Valley wetlands.

These documents show that Adani and the Queensland government knew polluting Reef waters was likely to happen, in breach of even the special license to pollute issued to Adani during the cyclone.

It’s been 15 months since the head of Queensland’s Environment Department said that Adani could face a fine of up to $3.8 million. So far Adani has been handed a paltry $12,190 fine, which Adani has refused to pay, and there is still no indication that your government intends to prosecute Adani.

The company is also in court appealing an order that it examine pollution of the Abbot Point Caley Valley wetlands, in an attempt to avoid undertaking a thorough investigation of its ability to manage stormwater at the port.

Meanwhile, Adani is seeking approval to increase the amount of coal that goes through its port by 10 million tonnes a year.

We understand time will soon run out to launch a prosecution.

I’m asking that you show Adani no special favours and enforce Queensland laws by immediately prosecuting Adani, to hold them to account for wilfully breaching their licence and releasing coal contaminated water into the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
