Call on the EBRD to stop funding gas pipelines

On February 17th, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) consultation on providing €500 million for the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) will close.

Respond to the consultation today and demand that the EBRD stops funding political oppression, human rights abuses and climate chaos.

TAP is the final section of the controversial BP-led Southern Gas Corridor that aims to bring gas from Azerbaijan to Europe. You can find more background info on the TAP, here.

Dear EBRD representatives (Alistair Clark, Biljana Radonjic Ker-Lindsay, Raphael Bello, Jörgen Frotzler, Horst Reichenbach, Anthony Bartzokas, Taskin Temiz and Filippo Gisante),

I am requesting that the EBRD immediately withdraws all funding and support for the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the system of gas pipelines known as the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC).

The human rights abuses and political repression imposed by the Azerbaijani government are well-documented. The EBRD - an organisation committed to promoting democracy - is undermining its own principles by financing the linking of the gas fields of Azerbaijan with the European gas network through the SGC.

I am also deeply concerned by the political oppression of local communities in Italy and Greece as a result of TAP. The pipeline will uproot ancient olive groves, forcibly evict farmers from their land and damage ecologically sensitive coastlines. This will negatively impact on the local economy and tourism in the areas affected by the pipeline and the EBRD should pay attention to the local opposition to this project.

It is estimated that the methane emitted as a result of the SGC will be as harmful to the planet as the coal infrastructure this project is aiming to replace. This will further exacerbate global warming. Rather than offering a bridge to a cleaner energy system, gas pipelines increase our dependency on fossil fuels and represent a false solution to the climate emergency now facing us.

The EBRD must be a world leader in shifting away from fossil fuels, investing in clean energy and defending democratic values and human rights. Funding of the TAP and SGC goes against these aims and threatens the safety and future of millions of people at the sharp end of climate impacts in the Global South.
